Vagelis Iliopoulos was born in Athens in 1964. He studied Pedagogics and Theology at the University of Athens. He has been working in the primary school field since 1984. He lives in Athens with his wife and his two children.
His first book for children was published in 1995 and was honored by The Greek Section of IBBY.
In 1997 the book with the most famous and popular hero in Greek children's literature, "The Little Triangle-fish", was published by Patakis Publications and was also honored by the Greek Section of IBBY. This book is about a different fish; it is a story that everybody loves while its success becomes greater year after year. Hundreds of thousands of young readers have enjoyed the adventures of that different fish as Vagelis Iliopoulos narrates them through his books with the Little Triangle-fish as their central hero and all published by Patakis Publications. Moreover, the Little Triangle-fish has inspired the puppet show group "The puppet show is coming." which has been performing his adventures for three years while a great number of children have played with their fish hero during educational programmes especially designed and lent to their schools by Patakis Publications. They have also portrayed him and his friends and their works of art have been exhibited during special exhibition events. They have exchanged letters with him on the Internet and they have sung his songs. The Little Triangle-fish has been the most famous and popular hero in Greek children's literature. However, beyond Greece and Cyprus, the Little Triangle-fish's adventures have been translated and published in Korea while for the purpose of their presentation in schools and literature festivals, the fish's adventures have also been translated in Italy and Bulgaria.
In addition, more than 30 of his children's books have been published, he has been given two awards for his work (2000 and 2004) while he has also been honored by the Women's Literature Society in Greece. A part of his work has been recorded in the National Competition Catalogue of Bordano, Italy (2000).
He has been given the award of Children's Novel (2004) by the literature magazine "Diavazo" while he was also a member of the Awards Committee for the National Children's Literature Award of the Greek Ministry of Education.
He had been General Secretary of the Greek Section of IBBY for six years and has represented it in all European IBBY meetings in Bologna. Today, he has been apprenticed to the Vice President position.
His book "Michele to Fotis" (written in cooperation with the Italian writer Luciano Comida and translated by Vassiliki Nika) was simultaneously published in both Greece and Italy. It has been published in Slovenia and Croatia, as well.
Apart from writing for children and young people, he also translates literature books for children, designs programmes so as to get children in touch with books and works on the promotion of children's literature by writing articles for the magazines My Child and Myself (a magazine for parents) and Window to Education (a magazine for educators) as well as for a kid's newspaper The Porthole. He has also presented a TV programme about children's books on Greek TV for two years (1993-1995) while he also teaches Theory of Children's Literature in the Open Foundation of Education. |
